NJ Transit commuters will have to fork over a little more money starting Friday.
Fares will be going up about 10 percent to help the agency close a budget deficit of about $60 million in its $1.5 billion budget. The actual increase will depend on the route being used. The fare hike is the first since July 2005 and the third since 1990.
Also starting Friday, the morning peak period will begin a half-hour later, starting at 7 a.m. instead of 6:30 a.m. Any train that arrives at its final destination between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. will be a peak fare and cost more. NJ Transit says part of the increase will go towards new and expanded services such as multi-level rail cars and additional parking spaces.
Some commuters told News 12 New Jersey that they don't object to the fare hike since 10 percent isn't a significant increase.
