New Jersey Transit buses will soon be fitted with technology to help improve safety for passengers and pedestrians alike.
The agency announced that cameras will be installed on the outside of each NJ Transit bus to help give riders a complete view of their surroundings.
“We pursued this technology to increase the operator’s awareness around his bus and to improve our safety,” says vice president of NJ Transit bus operations Mike Kilcoyne.
Gov. Chris Christie announced Wednesday that $29 million from the Transportation Trust Fund will be spent on the cameras.
“There are a lot of people who use our buses every day and are around our buses every day,” Christie said. “This is a good day for them.”
NJ Transit buses have been involved in at least 123 incidents in the past two years, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
NJ Transit says that all 2,500 buses in its fleet will be equipped with 360-degree cameras within five years.
More than 500,000 passengers ride NJ Transit buses each day.
