New Jersey is seeking to revoke the liquor license of one of President Donald Trump's golf clubs as a result of charges one of the clubs served too much alcohol to a man who pleaded guilty in a drunk driving accident that killed his father.
The Washington Post first reported details of the state's action Thursday.
The state attorney general's office says in a letter that Trump National in Colts Neck has 30 days to respond.
The state says the violations stem from August 2015 when the club sold alcohol to an already intoxicated person in violation of the license. The man pleaded guilty last year to a vehicular homicide charge.
Attorney General Gurbir Grewal defended the Division of Alcohol Beverage Control’s actions at an unrelated media event Friday.
“The action that was taken by ABC on Monday is what ABC does, they ensure public safety, they ensure our license holders comply and abide by the rules,” Grewal said.
The attorney general also denied that the actions were taken as some sort of attack on the president.
“If the suggestion is this is motivated by some other factor other than public safety and what the ABC does - these are career professionals who uphold our liquor laws…who are doing their jobs and have been doing their job day in and day out,” he said.
Under New Jersey law, if one liquor license is revoked, the rest of a company's liquor licenses would also be taken.
Trump owns two other golf courses in New Jersey.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
