The deadline to change your driver's license to a Real ID is May 7 - about a week away.
Real ID was put into motion 20 years ago to enhance safety at airports, but it was delayed numerous times.
If travelers don't have a passport, they will need the new identification to board an airplane.
News 12 asked customers at the Edison Motor Vehicle Commission if they were already on board. Some said they had it, while others said they hadn’t bothered to get it because they didn’t plan on traveling.
One woman said he couldn’t get it because there were no available appointments.
She’s not wrong. There are no appointments at this time at any MVC, which is frustrating to state Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz.
“This is a failure of the government to think outside the box. A failure of the government to be flexible,” said Munoz, who serves from her home in Union County.
Munoz says the MVC needs to have more mobile units, express lanes dedicated to REAL ID and more hours to make it easier to get the new Identification.
She believes the MVC should’ve been mailing out REAL IDs all along, without people having to go for an appointment.
“There’s no reason why the state of New Jersey couldn’t have said, 'OK, you have all the requirements for Real ID, you’ve got two forms to identity where you live, social, passport, your driver’s license, let's just issue the Real ID,'" she says.
To their credit, MVC has dedicated Thursdays to Real ID and has been out with a mobile unit. However, officials estimate that only about 61% of driver's licenses will be on board by the deadline.
