People looking to get a Real ID before federal enforcement begins on May 7 say they are having a hard time scheduling an appointment at the Motor Vehicle Commission.
In response, the MVC will be adding thousands of new slots as part of a new initiative called Real ID Thursday. Mobile Units will also operate in various locations across the state to accommodate high demand.
John Diliegro, of Englishtown, came to the Freehold MVC for a license renewal Monday afternoon.
"I had a 12 p.m. appointment to renew my license. I couldn’t get an appointment for a real ID, so I renewed my regular license," said Diliegro. "Then when I got here, they upgraded me to a Real ID."
Alice Eagle, of Freehold, hopes to get her REAL ID before she flies in May. However, she hasn't had any luck.
"I kept trying (to schedule) online," said Eagle. "I couldn’t get through, so I said let me bring all my stuff there. Maybe someone nice could help me. I’m going home to search for my passport."
People living in New Jersey who plan on flying domestically or going into certain federal buildings will have to provide a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or ID or another federally approved form of identification, like a passport.
"If you want to get one or if you need one, we want to accommodate you," said William Connolly, press secretary of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. "But if you have a passport, you don’t need one at this time. You can wait until a more convenient time for you."
According to Connolly, 1.2 million people have gotten their Real ID across the state so far. Last month, 36,000 appointments were added in response to the influx of people trying to get their REAL IDs before enforcement begins.
An additional 4500 will be available on Real ID Thursdays, starting March 20, followed by Mobile Unit appointments on Saturdays across the state beginning April 5.
People looking to schedule appointments are required to bring nine points of identity verification documents, including proof of residential address and social security numbers.
