The nation?s 38th president, Gerald R. Ford, died at his California home Tuesday, at the age of 93. Now, many New Jersey residents are remembering and reflecting on the former president who they say helped the nation out of turmoil.
Ford took office in 1974, after President Richard Nixon resigned over the Watergate scandal. Many residents say for the two years he served, he was a great president. One South Plainfield resident feels Ford led the country to the best of his ability.
Meanwhile, President George W. Bush remembered the 38th president Wednesday. Bush said Ford assumed power during a point of great division and turmoil for a nation that needed healing. Ford, a Republican from Michigan, began his political career working on campaigns in law school. President Nixon appointed Ford as vice president in 1973 when Spiro Agnew left office.
