Police are warning of shocking new ways that potential burglars can attempt to break into homes with Wi-Fi jammers and surveillance cameras placed in yards.
Police in Florham Park say a resident on Lincoln Avenue was in his basement when he heard a loud noise coming from the ground floor Monday at 11:30 a.m. The homeowner looked at his home video camera and saw a man attempting to enter his home. Then the camera system inside the home and his cellphone lost all service.
Police say the suspect used a Wi-Fi jamming device that also prevented cellphone use. Fortunately, the suspect ran off once he realized the homeowner was in the basement. The suspect has not yet been caught.
Police have suggestions to help prevent this from happening:
- Having your surveillance camera systems hardwired in your home.
- Have a landline telephone.
- Keep an eye on your yard.
Police say these suspects are also placing their own surveillance cameras in yards that are disguised as landscaping plants to blend in. Residents don’t notice anything as the suspects keep surveillance on the home.
Police say the lone suspect from Monday was described as a Hispanic male wearing tan/beige pants with a dark shirt and facemask. They say the suspect may be part of what police are calling a "South American Theft Group."
