The massive recall of tainted pet food has some New Jersey pet owners going to extremes to keep their four-legged friends healthy.
Millburn resident Sloan Spiessbach has been making home-cooked meals for her dog for three years. Now, other pet owners at a dog park are asking Spiessbach for her recipes.
?A lot of people are kind of seeing the benefit of knowing exactly what their pets are eating,? Spiessbach said. She adds there is one drawback, ?It is labor-intensive.?
Doctor Brian Voynick, a Randolph veterinarian and host of New 12 New Jersey?s Pet Stop, says he feeds his dog organic kibble. His cats are fed specially formulated canned food. He adds there are still a lot of unrecalled brands for pet owners to choose from.
For those pet owners determined to cook themselves, Voynick advises, ?For the short run, boiled chicken and rice is just fine, but for the long term, they really need to check with their veterinarian as far as what nutrients to add, supplements, vitamins, minerals and so on.?
