State officials are hoping that a new smartphone app can help increase tourism in New Jersey.
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno says that the state is hoping to draw tourism dollars from out of state and even from Canada. State leaders have found that many Canadians are coming to New Jersey to visit the Jersey Shore.
"Most of our visitors are daytrippers, we're looking at a lot of daytrippers up and down the boardwalk," Guadagno said while visiting Jenkinson's Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach.
Guadagno says she wants to bolster New Jersey's economy and that she's hoping to do that through tourism. The lieutenant governor announced a new smartphone app that will allow visitors to learn all about the Garden State.
"That app constantly changes," she says. "It's constantly updating places to go and things to do."
The new app is called Visit New Jersey. The state Department of Tourism is hoping to use the app to reach out to all New Jersey visitors, particularly those visiting from Canada.
"Most of these people come from Canada," Guadagno says. "We have a huge marketing campaign in Canada and it's 'Visit the Cape,' which is Cape May."
State leaders are also hoping to see an increase in revenue at Atlantic City. Atlantic City is New Jersey's most famous attraction, but it saw a slight decrease in tourism income for 2015. Casino revenue was reportedly down for the month of June as well.
The new app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
