(AP) - A man who allegedly attacked police whenthey tried to subdue him outside a northern New Jersey bar diedshortly after being taken into custody.
The incident began around 2 a.m. Friday when Newark policeresponded to a disturbance call and observed the suspect walkingnearby. Authorities would not release his name, but relativesidentified him as 30-year-old Basire Farrell of Newark.
Detective Todd McClendon, a police spokesman, said the man hitpolice vehicles and yelled obscenities as officers approached him.He then kicked and punched them as they subdued him, and he alsobit an officer.
Emergency workers were told to take the man to a nearbyhospital, but he went into cardiac arrest during the trip and dieda short time later. It wasn't clear what caused the death, and anautopsy will be performed.
Two officers were treated for undisclosed injuries.
McClendon said the incident is under police review.
