Poor road conditions forced state police and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority to reduce speed limits on many major roadways Friday.
Despite the reduced speed limits, many say drivers still pushed the peddle to the metal. The speed limit near Exit 11 on the Turnpike was 35 mph at some points during the day. However, some drivers say cars were flying by them at speeds of 60 mph and higher.
The slick roads caused several accidents, and some state troopers had to assist motorists who were stalled. State police blame the wet conditions and speed for the many fender benders.
State police and Turnpike officials set the speed limits based on road conditions. They want to remind drivers that speed limits are not suggested, they are the law. Turnpike officials also add state police have been out enforcing the limits.
