A North Bergen hospital is giving its employees extra resources to help them quit smoking during the Great American Smokeout Thursday.

Employees of Palisades Medical Center on River Road can join yoga and meditation classes to help them get started with the quitting process during the Great American Smokeout, which is held nationwide to encourage smokers to quit.

Palisades Medical Center is one of more than 20 hospitals in New Jersey that has banned smoking on its property.

Mary Ellen Cleveland, who quit smoking three years ago, says it's possible to quit. Cleveland says once she was mentally prepared to stop, she beat her own timetable.

"I just started talking to myself mentally every day, saying how bad it was and all the reasons that I should stop," she says. "I targeted Jan. 14, which was my birthday, and I actually wound up quitting Jan. 2."
