Customers supposedly taken in by false promises from third-party energy suppliers received some vindication Monday, thanks to the attorney general's office.
The New Jersey Attorney General's Office announced it will impose fines on the company Systrum for breaking promises to customers and overcharging by as much as 150 percent.
A Kane in Your Corner investigation first exposed customers' complaints about Systrum. Representatives from the company supposedly told customers they would save money on their electric bills. Instead, the costs increased and customers had trouble canceling their contracts.
Systrum agreed to pay the state over $550,000, most of which will go to the former customers. The company will also no longer be allowed to provide energy services to residential customers.
