A Tinton Falls man locked in an international custody battle was granted visitation rights by a judge in Brazil Friday after being denied the right to see his son since his former wife took the boy to Brazil in 2004.
David Goldman spent six hours in a mediation meeting in Brazil Friday, fighting for the right to see his son. Goldman says his former wife took his then 4-year-old son Sean on what he thought was a two-week vacation to Brazil. According to Goldman, once they arrived in Brazil, his wife called to tell him their marriage was over and she was keeping their son. His wife married another man in Brazil and died giving birth to another child last year.
Goldman traveled to Brazil last week with Congressman Chris Smith who has been fighting on his behalf to reunite him with his son. According to Goldman, his son is being kept in Brazil illegally based on the Hague Treaty, which deals with international child abduction.
Goldman says he is still in disbelief.
"Until it actually happens, where I'm holding my son in my arms, it's tough to actually believe," Goldman says.
