Westbound lanes on Interstate 80 in Wharton are expected to reopen this weekend, which is 11 days ahead of schedule.
However, it comes with a compromise from drivers over the next few days. As crews work to get all three I-80 lanes reopened, some temporary closures are happening this week before Exit 34B, Jefferson, Sparta.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation says one of two open westbound lanes will be closed during overnight hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday into the early hours of Thursday morning.
On Friday, all westbound lanes will be closed and detoured for final paving and restriping.
All three lanes are expected to fully reopen on Saturday.
This comes after two lanes on the eastbound side reopened almost three weeks ago. Drivers and business owners alike have been dealing with months of delays and closures following multiple discoveries of sinkholes and voids along I-80.
"This is welcome news for residents, commuters, and businesses who have been incredibly patient throughout the construction," said Sen. Anthony Bucco.
Assemblywoman Aura Dunn shared that she was pleased to report that repairs were progressing, with all lanes on track to open by June 21.
NJDOT reminds drivers that until then, speed limits have been reduced in active work zones.
For westbound lanes, the speed limit is 45 mph and for eastbound lanes, the speed limit is 40 mph.
