Communities nationwide and in the Garden State took part in an initiative Saturday meant to keep unwanted and unused prescription drugs off the streets.
The goal of National Drug Take Back Day is to rid homes of unused prescription drugs and reduce drug abuse.
"The effects of it can take over your life. We see it every day," says Eatontown Police Sgt. Tony Amodio. "We bring people in here who are addicted to opioids."
The medications were able to be dropped off at sites around the state with no questions asked.
"They get turned over through the program and they're eventually destroyed properly," Amodio says.
The National Drug Take Back Day program took in 450 tons of medications last year.
