News 12 had the opportunity to join a crew of painters on the Outerbridge Crossing, one of the busiest and most historic bridges in the area.
For the painters, the day starts early in the morning with a drop off in the middle of the span.
Then follows a dizzying ride another 120 feet into the air to the top of the cantilever.
For safety reasons, your body is attached to several ropes.
The bridge opened to the public 90 years ago.
The bridge spans 8,800 feet long and is 143 feet above the river.
It's one of the main connectors from New Jersey to Staten Island, over the Arthur Kill, or as some prefer to call it, the Staten Island Sound.
