A Newark police officer who was shot in the leg Tuesday afternoon has been released from the hospital.
That officer, identified as Jabrill Paul, was released around 5 p.m. Wednesday. He said he was happy to be going home.
A second officer shot in the neck and shoulder area will remain at University Hospital for a few more days to recover.
“Two officers showed up to do their job, and unfortunately were shot in the line of duty,” says state Attorney General Matt Platkin.
The officers were shot Tuesday afternoon behind an apartment complex on Chancellor Avenue, while attempting to question a man wanted in crime.
Both officers are in their 20s and are new to the Newark police force.
“Both have 1 1/2 years on the job – 1 1/2 years and they have to deal with a traumatic incident like this,” says Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Frage.
Both officers are said to be alive thanks in part to the heroic efforts of their fellow officers and the brave residents they typically protect.
"I want to thank the heroic efforts of the other officers that came to the aid of the officers being shot. And especially the civilians that came to the aid of those that were shot,” says Frage.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka commended the officers and civilians who helped – and thanked the families of the officers who were shot while doing their job.
“[They’re] probably relieved that they are OK but dealing with anxiety of getting the call of their son was shot in line of duty,” Baraka says.
The man accused of shooting the officers was identified as Kendall Howard. He is facing two counts of attempted murder charges.
