The Newark Police Department needs the public’s help finding a 69-year-old man with dementia who has gone missing.
Officials say that Ben Norman has wandered away from his home in the past and gotten lost. They say he was recently found as far away as Morristown.
Norman was reported missing on July 3. He was last spotted in his neighborhood along South 15th Street in Newark – not far from West Side Park and the 4th Police Precinct.
"This is actually his fourth time missing, but this is the longest time he’s been missing,” says Detective Luther Anarfi-Agyeman.
The detective says that police previously found Norman in Bayonne on the bridge in 2021. He was also found in Morristown in March.
"He was…actually sleeping in someone's random vehicle in the back. And he was transported to Morristown Medical Center for treatment," Anarfi-Agyeman says.
Norman is Black and is 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs only 80 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue sweatpants, a gray shirt and gray sneakers. He also has a tattoo of a crab on his arm.
His family says that this is the longest that he has ever been gone, which is why his daughter who reported him missing is concerned.
“She stated to me that he’s a fast walker and every time we ask him where he’s going, he claims he’s going to work,” Anarfi-Agyeman says.
Officials say Norman does not have his wallet, ID or phone with him, but they say that he will respond to his name.
Anyone with information, or if you see Norman, should call Newark police at 973-733-6000.
