The city of Newark is "going green" in an effort to revitalize its neighborhoods.

A local bakery in Newark?s South Ward is receiving an eco-friendly makeover, which will include the application of a special roof coating to make the building more energy efficient.

In addition to the changes being made to businesses, some new houses have been constructed with environmentally friendly features, such as bamboo floors, recycled concrete counter tops, energy-efficient appliances and solar panels on the roofs.

But besides conserving energy, city officials say ?going green? is also expected to create thousands of new jobs in Newark, where the unemployment rate is almost double the national average.
