Newark has extended its Code Red through Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. due to scorching hot temperatures.
The health warning is issued when the heat index is 100 degrees or more due to the potential for illness and/or death. It serves as a reminder to take precautions to prevent heat-related stress and exhaustion.
“I’ve been keeping cool by staying inside. I come out of the house when the sun goes down and stay hydrated,” said Andre Dowell. “I take two showers, not too hot. Room temperature water.”
Several cooling centers were open throughout Newark, including many with pools. Alan Younger’s son was among those taking advantage of the amenities the city offers.
“He’s in here jumping off diving boards and swimming,” said Younger. “I’m just making the best for him - doing daddy duties, that’s all.”
Heavy rainfall Friday evening cooled down the city substantially, allowing residents who waited out the storm to enjoy a monthly food truck festival.
“I’m hoping that this cools it down and doesn’t make it more humid,” said Jakia Wilson.
The Health Department also advised residents to check in on isolated neighbors, including the elderly - and to not take part in activities that would result in heat-related illnesses.
