Newark airport terminal evacuated amid strong odor
Passengers were evacuated from part of Newark Liberty International Airport Saturday just as the busy Thanksgiving travel period got under way.
It all began around 11 a.m. when TSA workers at a security checkpoint in Terminal B complained of a strong odor coming out of one of the gates. Two of the workers fell ill and were taken to a hospital for nausea and dizziness symptoms.
Several planes had to be rerouted to other gates while authorities looked for the source of the leak.
Authorities say 11 people were treated and one person fainted after complaining of symptoms related to the odor.
A spokesman for the Port Authority says crews were unable to detect natural gas or carbon monoxide in the terminal.
Terminal B reopened hours later and the cause of the odor is under investigation.
