New York is now a designated Purple Heart state.

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the legislation in November that formally recognizes service members wounded or killed while serving in the military.

Veterans and advocates say the designation is important to remember those who served.

More than 700,000 veterans live in New York. The designation is not expected to cost local governments anything.
