The brand new Essex County Crime Scene Unit is racking up an impressive string of wins in the battle against crime.
Dusting for fingerprints and searching for clues are the norm for detectives in the crime scene unit. Now, with new technology the crew can process results faster and catch criminals in a short period of time.
DNA evidence recently helped West Caldwell police connect a Montclair man already in jail for assault and kidnapping to the scenes of several robberies.
The new $2.5 million facility not only includes faster DNA technology but also six vehicles with forensic processing equipment. Detectives say the vehicles make it easier to bring the lab to the crime scene.
Police say the new equipment was paid for with forfeiture funds that was taken from criminals.
