City health officials have launched a pilot program in the South Bronx aimed at fighting depression among senior citizens.
According to city health officials, more than one in 10 Bronx seniors suffer from depression. That's why they have started a new program at 20 South Bronx senior centers. Seniors can get screened for depression at the centers and be sent to their primary care physician for help if needed. Health experts say some of the problems encountered by seniors include physical pain and the loss of loved ones.
The pilot program will operate in the South Bronx until June. The city will then make a final decision based on the program's success whether or not to extend it to the rest of the Bronx and other boroughs.
