New Jersey utility companies now won’t be able to cut off a customer’s service for nonpayment for 90 days if the person has a medical condition.
Gov. Phil Murphy signed Linda’s Law Friday. The law is named for Linda Daniels, a Newark grandmother who died after PSE&G disconnected her power. Daniels used an electrically powered oxygen tank.
Under the law, utility companies must request information from customers twice a year to verify who is using life-sustaining equipment.
The state Board of Public Utilities already considers outdoor temperatures before power is turned off.
