New Jersey is boosting its goals for the number of electric vehicles it wants on roads and is offering an incentive on electric vehicles of up to $5,000.

Gov. Phil Murphy signed the new goals and the new incentive into law Friday. Environmental groups and auto retailers praised the measure.

“Increasing the use of electric vehicles is a critical step to secure New Jersey’s clean energy future,” the governor said. “By establishing aggressive goals and strong incentives for electric vehicles, we are repositioning our economy and state for a clean future.

The law calls for 330,000 electric vehicles by 2025 and 2 million by 2035. That's a huge increase over the number currently registered in the state. U.S. Department of Energy figures last updated in 2019 show there are about 6,600 registered electric vehicles in the state as of 2017.
