New Jersey has launched a new office aimed at assisting women in the state who have served in the military.

The Office of Women Veterans, a division of the New Jersey Department of Veterans Affairs, will focus on the unique needs of women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The office will be dedicated to helping women veterans access benefits, support services, career opportunities and connections with other veterans.

“Women veterans have played an essential role in defending our country and strengthening our communities, yet their service has too often gone unrecognized,” Governor Mikie Sherrill said in a statement. “The creation of the Office of Women Veterans ensures that New Jersey is meeting the needs of this growing population with dedicated leadership and focused support.”

Sherrill is the first female veteran to serve as governor. She is one of nearly 26,000 women in New Jersey who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

“The Office of Women Veterans ensures that their service is not only recognized, but that our team ensures access to the veteran benefits and programs that they have earned during their time in uniform,” Commissioner of Veterans Affairs Vincent Solomeno said in a statement.
