New Jersey is celebrating National Hot Dog Day.

The summer staple was invented in Germany in the 1600s. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans will eat 7 billion hot dogs this summer. That's 818 hot dogs consumed every second from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Bill Chrisafinis, of Rutt's Hut hot dogs in Clifton, says hot dogs are a comfort food. Rutt's Hut has been serving deep fried hot dogs since 1928.

"It breaks down economic barriers," Chrisafinis says. "A poor guy eating one could be sitting next to a rich guy. Everybody eats hot dogs."

The most expensive hot dog ever sold costs $145. It was sold in California and weighed 3 pounds. It was served with truffle oil and a host of sophisticated condiments.
