Shoppers and employees were forced to evacuate a Howell Walmart on Monday after police received a bomb threat that was later determined to be unfounded.
Howell police responded to the retail location at 4900 Route 9 South around 2:00 p.m. to investigate the report. According to authorities, the threat was initially reported to the Lakewood Police Department before being relayed to Howell.
Immediately upon receiving the information, officers coordinated a prompt evacuation of all patrons and employees. Police detectives and officers conducted a thorough investigation of the building to ensure the safety of the public.
Following the search, detectives confirmed that the threat was unfounded. No hazardous materials or devices were discovered on the premises.
The store remained closed for approximately three and a half hours during the sweep. Management was given the all-clear to reopen the doors to the public at approximately 5:30 p.m.
While the scene has been cleared, the investigation into the origin of the threat remains active. Authorities are working to identify the individual responsible for the report.
No injuries were reported during the evacuation process. Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Howell Police Department's detective bureau.
