The new Goethals Bridge is officially open in both directions after two years of construction, replacing the 89-year-old bridge known for its claustrophobic conditions.
Two lanes heading from New Jersey to Staten Island opened on Saturday, while the other two heading into New Jersey opened Sunday evening.
News 12 is told that while the $1.5 billion bridge remains under construction, two lanes headed in each direction will be open for use while the construction of a second span is completed.
The finished bridge will have three 12-foot lanes in each direction and will also preserve a corridor for future mass transit.
The Old Goethals Bridge is set to be demolished, and the second modern span will be finished by 2018.
