Gov. Phil Murphy announced that over 500 state municipalities would be receiving funding to help improve local roadways.

Murphy, along with Lt. Gov. Shelia Oliver made the announcement Friday inside the East Orange Department of Public Works garage. The governor says that $161 million in municipal aid grants will be split between 537 municipalities, which makes up 90% of New Jersey’s towns.

“The projects we are partnering with our communities to fund – from road and bridge repairs to pedestrian safety and bikeway improvements – are at the core of the Department of Transportation’s commitment to making communities work,” Murphy said.

The money for the grants comes from the Transportation Trust Fund, which is replenished by taxes on gasoline in New Jersey.
