A surge in park vandalism has left a number of Morris County communities fed up, and one town is considering a new system to keep vandals out.
Turkey Brook Park in Mount Olive has been hit by vandals on more than one occasion. The town is now considering the installation of surveillance cameras to keep watch over the park.
In only 12 months, the park has been vandalized more than a dozen times. Most of the damage has come in the form of graffiti and destruction of property by the concession stands and soda machines. The town believes they can reduce the vandalism if the cameras are installed.
While some residents may have issues with invasion of privacy, most think the surveillance system is a good idea.
?It?s a good idea first of all for the safety,? Carlos Cruz, a Mount Olive resident, said. ?Secondly, you won?t invade any privacy from anybody here.
Randolph, Rockaway and Parsippany are also looking into the possibility of a surveillance system. They are awaiting police reports to determine if the cameras are necessary in their communities.
If installed, the surveillance system won?t be cheap. Mount Olive is looking to spend up to $20,000 for three cameras.
The Mount Olive Town Council will take up the issue at their meeting Tuesday night.
