A Newark man was arrested after allegedly trying to rob a woman as she was pushing her infant in a stroller in Summit Wednesday morning.

According to Summit police, the victim was walking on Park Avenue at about 9 a.m. when an unknown man approached her from behind, then moved in front of the stroller and attempted to grab her cell phone. The mother struggled for a brief time with the suspect and was eventually able to grab the phone from his hand. Police said the man also reached into the baby stroller and grabbed the woman’s sunglasses before fleeing in a dark-colored 2024 Chevrolet Impala.

Police responded to the scene after a witness called 911. Through an investigation, officers were able to identify and locate the suspect about two hours later. He was identified as Darrell L. Mitchell, 55, of Newark.

Mitchell was charged with robbery, endangering the welfare of a child, and receiving stolen property. He was later transported to Essex County Correctional Facility.
