Mother of ‘Baby Mary’ to serve 364 days in prison for killing infant in 1984

Officials charged Catherine Crumlich, 57, with the death in April 2023. Crumlich was 17 years old at the time of the infant’s birth in 1984.

There is now closure to a cold case murder that is nearly 40 years old.
Catherine Crumlich, mother to a deceased infant dubbed “Baby Mary” will serve just under a year in prison in connection to the child’s death.
Officials charged Crumlich, 57, with the death in April 2023. Crumlich was 17 years old at the time of the infant’s birth in 1984.
Officials say two boys found the infant’s body in Mendham in December 1984. The infant still had her umbilical cord attached and was wrapped in a towel inside a plastic bag, according to authorities.
The medical examiner determined that Baby Mary was alive at the time of birth. Her death was ruled a homicide.
A judge imposed a disposition of probation for Crumlich after she serves 364 days behind bars.
Crumlich pleaded guilty to manslaughter in February.
