Morristown is the latest town in New Jersey to issue municipal identification cards for residents.
The program launched Tuesday with a kick-off celebration at town hall.
The cards are available to all Morristown residents over the age of 14.
Residents must provide proof of residence in town. All other information, including immigration status, is not necessary. No information is kept in any database.
Morristown officials say that these identification cards will allow residents to open bank accounts, access health care and use town facilities like public pools and other services.
Several other towns in New Jersey have implemented similar programs. Officials in those towns, as well as in Morristown, say they want to remind undocumented residents that the IDs are not being used as a way to target them, but to include them.
“We are a diverse community and open and caring,” says Morristown Mayor Timothy Dougherty. “One thing that will benefit people is feeling more part of the community.”
Applicants wishing to obtain a Morristown ID card must make an appointment.
