More than 100 firefighters rushed to Long Branch Thursday as flames tore through an apartment complex under construction.
It happened around 10 a.m. on the 100 block of Broadway, near Pier Village. Workers first noticed flames coming from the roof of the four-story building. Strong winds pushed the flames and smoke west through the nearly finished apartments.
Debris hit Long Branch Fire Chief Arthur Green in the face, sending him to the hospital with a broken nose, but he returned to duty after being released.
The complex is part of the Kushner Companies redevelopment along Broadway. Kushner broke ground in March 2024. The entire area was slated for redevelopment but was delayed several years. During that time, the land sat vacant.
Since groundbreaking, both sides of the street rose four stories tall, creating a canyon-like view down Broadway. The two buildings will house 299 apartments and a supermarket.
It's not known how many apartment units were damaged in the fire. Long Branch Fire Department and Monmouth County are still investigating the cause.
