Some Monmouth University students are calling for further action to be taken after a homophobic sign was held up during Friday night’s basketball game.
The sign was aimed at a player on the team from Sienna College. A photo posted online shows that several people seated in the Monmouth student section were holding printouts of a Tinder dating profile of that Sienna player. Another sign read “Stick to Grindr,” a reference to the popular dating app used by members of the LGBTQ community.
Monmouth University President Patrick Leahy said in a statement that an investigation is underway, but some students say that's not enough.
“We did have Pride Night the night before, and so I just felt like timing-wise that happening, even though it should not have happened, was just not appropriate,” says junior Daniel Rodriguez.
“I feel like it’s not just a problem at Monmouth. I feel like it’s a problem around the world and just addressing it in one place isn’t going to fix it,” says sophomore Mackenzie Wasik.
In an email to students, Leahy said in part, "We value every member of our campus community. Strong and inclusive communities are built on a bond of trust. When that bond is broken, we take it very seriously. Discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated on this campus."
