Monmouth County SPCA Chief Buddy Amato wants jail time for a Middletown man who allegedly beat three goslings to death with an umbrella.
Witnesses say the man chased off the baby geese's parents before luring them into the woods and killing them. Amato describes the suspect as a coward.
"It's warped," he says. "It's beyond warped."
Amato says he's seeking a one-year sentence and thousands of dollars in fines. Neighbors say they're disgusted by the incident, but this isn't the first brush of violence with waterfowl for residents of the area.
A neighbor in the suspect's apartment complex pleaded guilty last year to animal abuse charges for trying to shoot geese with a bow and arrow. He was fined a few hundred dollars.
News 12 New Jersey is withholding the suspect's identity until animal cruelty charges have been filed.
