Middlesex County residents are dumping their electronics in hopes of sparing the earth from high-tech waste, in a twist on traditional recycling.
Every month the county sponsors a consumer electronic drop-off program. It ensures that old computers, fluorescent tubes and televisions are recycled instead of ending up in a landfill.
Participants say electronics like computers can be dangerous to the environment if disposed in an improper way. They say they would rather have their electronics help the environment rather than hurt it.
The county says the drop-off program is gaining in popularity. Officials say the county collects in excess of 300,000 pounds of electronic equipment a year.
County officials say most towns will not pick up electronic equipment if it is tossed out on the curb. Residents are advised to take their electronics to recycling centers instead.
