With New Jersey residents facing the highest property taxes in the country, some officials believe merging towns may help relieve some of the financial strain.
In Mercer County, officials are considering merging two "hole and doughnut" municipalities, where one sits entirely within another. In Mercer, Princeton Borough is situated within Princeton Township.
State Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, who represents both municipalities says, given the economic crisis, it's time to re-examine merging them and other similar communities.
"When it's pointed out that you can have one police department, one public works department, it's going to save both communities a lot of taxpayer dollars in the end," Gusciora says.
Residents of both Princetons will have a chance to voice their thoughts on merging their communities at an April 27 public hearing.
