Sen. Robert Menendez denies any wrongdoing in office amid reports that corruption charges against him are pending.
"I have always conducted myself appropriately and in accordance with the law," Menendez said during a news conference in Newark Friday evening.
The senator says he is not going anywhere.
CNN reported Friday afternoon that the Justice Department is preparing to bring criminal corruption charges against the two-term senator.
According to the report, Menendez is accused of using his Senate office to push the business interests of a Democratic donor and friend, Florida-based ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen, in exchange for gifts.
Previous reports say that investigators have been looking into Menendez's relationship with Melgen, as far back as 2010.
Sen. Menendez states Melgen is a dear family friend and that they have attended many of each other's family events, as well as exchanged personal gifts.
A spokeswoman for the senator released a statement saying "As has been reported, the start of this investigation is suspect. We know many false allegations have been made about this matter, allegations that were ultimately publicly discredited. We also know that the official investigation of this matter is ongoing, and therefore cannot address allegations being made anonymously."
A spokesman for the Justice Department declined to comment on the existence of any investigation.
