Men accused in Jersey City double shooting that killed teen, injured girl, plead not guilty
The two men accused in a shooting that left a 19-year-old dead and a 10-year-old girl hurt pleaded not guilty to the crime.
Corey Pickett, 21, and Jonathan Ferrera, 21, appeared before a judge Tuesday in the Hudson County Courthouse via closed circuit monitors from the county jail.
The men are charged in the murder of Jimmy Gregory and the attempted murder of a 10-year-old Riayna Albright, who was caught in the gunfire.
Authorities say the shooting happened Sunday night just after 10 p.m. plainclothes police officers witnessed the shooting on the 300 block of Ocean Avenue in Jersey City.
Albright was sitting in the back of her mother’s car when she was shot in the back. She remains in the hospital, but is expected to survive.
Officials say that Pickett and Ferrera were quickly arrested because officers were in the area.
"The Jersey City Police Department did a really great job and it was their street crimes unit that immediately captured the two suspects,” says Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.
A motive for the shooting was not immediately released.
The two suspects are expected back in court Friday for a bail hearing.
