Filming of the new "Mean Girls" musical movie started this month, and movie sets have popped up in several central New Jersey cities.
“Mean Girls: The Musical” is currently being filmed in Middletown. The set shows production lights, trailers and buses with North Shore High School. This is the school where the cast of "Mean Girls" attends in the 2004 movie as well as in the 2011 television film "Mean Girls 2."
The Garden State’s film industry is booming, and the state could see a lot more production.
In 2021, New Jersey Economic Development Authority expanded its Film Tax Credit program. New Jersey's robust film tax credit allows filmmakers to dedicate more dollars to the finished project while staying within budget. The tax credit awarded by the NJ-EDA is equal to 30% to 35% of qualified film production expenses. The program will run through 2034.
Lionsgate is building a brand new $125 million TV and film studio in Newark. Netflix studios is also coming to Fort Monmouth, investing over $900 million.
“Mean Girls” is not the only movie currently being filmed in New Jersey. There is speculation of “Joker 2” filming in Belleville this week.
The “Walking Dead” spin off is also filming in New Jersey. Pictures were shown in Franklin Lakes and East Rutherford. And “Severance” with Ben Stiller is filming at Bell Works in Holmdel.
The "Mean Girls" musical is written by Tina Fey and is filming for Paramount+. Filming details for this musical was made available due to a casting call and information on
NJ.gov. Casting for “Mean Girls” took place last month in New Jersey. Filming will take place through April 19.
