Maywood police close mailboxes after thefts; 2 Bronx men arrested

In some cases, police said keys to the mailboxes were obtained and used to gain access, allowing large amounts of mail to be taken in the middle of the night.

Several mailboxes in Maywood have been covered up and closed after a string of recent mail thefts in town.

Two men from the Bronx were arrested in connection with one of the incidents, but other mailboxes were targeted as well.

Police identify the two men as 22-year-old Enyer Portes-Herrera and 18-year-old Justin Gonzalez-Morel.

The charges against Portes-Herrera include identity theft, theft of movable property, trafficking personal information of another and possession of burglary tools.

Gonzalez-Morel is charged with conspiracy to commit identity theft and money laundering.

In some cases, police said keys to the mailboxes were obtained and used to gain access, allowing large amounts of mail to be taken in the middle of the night.

Police in Maywood suggest using the Mail Drop inside the post office to ensure your mail gets where it is intended.
