Mayor: Polish veteran memorial statue to be moved
A statue honoring 20,000 people killed while fighting for Poland in World War II will be moved to another part of Jersey City.
The Katyn Memorial currently sits at the Jersey City waterfront. But Mayor Steven Fulop announced that it will be move elsewhere. The area along the waterfront is being redeveloped.
Fulop says that the statue will be moved near the intersection of Washington and Montgomery streets.
The decision to move the statue was met with harsh criticism from Polish-Americans who live in Jersey City. Officials in Poland have also expressed anger at the move. The Polish government is calling on Fulop to apologize for calling one of the Polish senators an anti-Semite.
Some Jersey City residents have placed flowers and candles by the statue to mourn the decision to move it.
