A Manasquan resident is making it her mission to preserve a drawbridge that connects Brielle and Manasquan.
Eloise Knight says the county wants to replace the Glimmer Glass Bridge with a wider span, but she wants to save the original by getting it on the National Historic Registry.
?It?s very important. It?s a piece of history, it?s 108 years old,? Knight says.
The drawbridge has a large pulley system with counterpart weights. Some officials consider it to be a technological treasure.
The county engineer is questioning the bridge?s historic value. He says almost everything on the bridge has been replaced. The county says the bridge needs to be brought up to modern safety standards.
Neighbors say widening the bridge would ruin the aesthetics of the area and make speeding even more of a problem.
Knight raised $13,000 to pay an architectural consultant. That consultant convinced the State Historical Commission that the bridge is worth saving. The Department of Environmental Protection commissioner still needs to sign off on the historical nomination before the bridge can be considered nationally.
