A man who immigration authorities say was twice deported from the United States is going to prison for raping and killing a jogger in a Hudson County park.
A judge on Thursday sentenced 35-year-old Jorge Rios to 30 years in prison for the 2019 attack on 45-year-old Carolina Cano in Liberty Park in Jersey City. The judge also imposed a 10-year sentence to run concurrently for aggravated sexual assault.
Prosecutors say Rios admitted to sexually assaulting and strangling Cano, who was from Peru and had been in the U.S. for about two years, working as a nanny.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say Rios, who is from Honduras, was removed from the U.S. in 2003 and 2004.
Hudson County introduced new security measures at the park shortly after Cano's murder.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
