A man was killed after being struck by a New Jersey Transit train early Tuesday morning in Cranford.

According to a spokesperson for NJ Transit, the Raritan Valley Line train left Newark Penn Station at 1:38 a.m. A short time later, at about 1:44 a.m., the train "struck and fatally injured an adult male trespasser just east of Cranford Station," the spokesperson said. The age and identity of the victim have not yet been released.

The train, which was carrying 25 customers and crew, was scheduled to arrive in Raritan at 2:34 a.m. None of the people on board the train were injured. Officials say this was the final train of the day on the Raritan Valley Line.

Customers on the train were transported to their final stop by bus, the NJ Transit spokesperson said.

The incident remains under investigation by New Jersey Transit police.
