First responders rescued an unresponsive man from an early-morning apartment fire Monday in Newark, authorities said.

Firefighters responded around 4 a.m. to a report of a fire at 319 Hawthorne Ave., according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda. Crews pulled an unresponsive man from a first-floor apartment and transported him to University Hospital, where he was reported in critical condition as of Monday morning, officials said.

A firefighter was also taken to the hospital with burns to his hands, wrists and face and was listed in stable condition, authorities said.

No other injuries were reported, though two adult residents were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross said it is assisting the family of two with emergency needs.

The fire was brought under control at about 4:15 a.m. The cause remains under investigation.
